AI and IVAs (Intelligent Virtual Assistants) were a hot topic in 2015.
Industry leaders invested tens of millions of dollars into emerging AI and IVA technology, mergers and acquisitions started with a bang with Wit.ai joining Facebook last January, and the social network’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg even resolved in the new year to “build a simple AI” to run his house and help him work, similar to Jarvis in Iron Man.
Check out the following 16 quotes for a look back at the year that was in AI and IVAs.
“The progress in AI research makes it timely to focus research not only on making AI more capable, but also on maximizing the societal benefit of AI.”
“Humans [will] increasingly work side by side with robots, software agents and other machines.”
“The future is ours to shape. I feel we are in a race that we need to win. It’s a race between the growing power of the technology and the growing wisdom we need to manage it.”
“What started as an isolated app on the iPhone has evolved. Intelligent assistants constitute an entirely new network of activity. No longer confined to our personal computing devices, assistants are being embedded within every object of interest in the cloud and the internet of things.”
“The future of personalized customer experience is inevitably tied to ‘Intelligent Assistance’.”
“We are entering a new world. The technologies of machine learning, speech recognition, and natural language understanding are reaching a nexus of capability. The end result is that we’ll soon have artificially intelligent assistants to help us in every aspect of our lives.”
“Geeks want machines that do things without asking. But what makes good AI is good communication with the user.”
“As these systems take a more central role in the business world, every modern enterprise will need an AI strategy.”

“The contradictory demands for power-draining larger screens and a larger battery life highlight a need for better solutions, such as the use of intelligent assistants to reduce the need to always touch a screen. … Smartphone users believe AI will take over many common activities, such as searching the net, getting travel guidance and as personal assistants.”
“There is an opportunity to fundamentally change how we work – a promise made more compelling by the fact that these cognitive based systems will be able to learn and adapt to our particular situation.”
“The world faces a set of increasingly complex, interdependent and urgent challenges that require ever more sophisticated response. We’d like to think that successful work in artificial intelligence can contribute by augmenting our collective capacity to extract meaningful insight from data and by helping us to innovate new technologies and processes to address some of our toughest global challenges.”
“Computers used to not be able to see very well, and now they're starting to open their eyes.”
